This April the library begun a series of restoration and renovation projects, some of which have been in the planning stage for a couple of years, and some that are quite recently planned.
This webpage is intended to give our patrons and friends a running update on the progress of the various projects.
Projects with Timelines
- April 19-May 11:
Floor replacement on the main level circulation and stack areas.
The current floor is the original pine sub-floor from circa 1850. It’s a lovely, rustic look, but the soft pine was never intended for direct traffic, so there are now some worn and dangerous spots that need repair. The project calls for a new maple 6 inch planking, electric work, and a complete reconfiguration of the level to accommodate a new reading area and teen space. While work is in progress, limited lending (new items and inter-library loans) is available in the makerspace.
- Roof Replacement — Done!
- April 1 - June 30: Window and exterior door replacement
We received two very generous grants from the Morris County Historic Preservation Commission to replace the doors and the vinyl windows on all 3 levels of the library. The new windows are customized, double-paned wood, so they should be a lot more energy efficient than the old ones.
- May-July: Exterior siding repair and painting
This work is also funded in part by the Morris County Historic Preservation Commission. The library was last painted in 2011, so a new coat and repair are due. In keeping with its Victorian history, the building will get new, period appropriate colors.
- May-July: Backyard Renovation and Redesign
This project is generously funded by Boonton Main Street through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. The redesign by John Kohut calls for installing a small park, new paving, and amphitheater-like environment, complete with a small stage that will allow for outdoor programming,
- June-July: New Church Street Fencing and Exterior Staircase
The white plastic fence along Church Street will be replaced with aluminum fencing, and the exterior staircase leading to the 2nd floor will be replaced and brought up to code.
